Good Practice Traffic Signal Timing - Puget Sound Washington
The Puget Sound region of Washington State recently formed a Regional Traffic Operations Committee (RTOC) focused on improving the operation of the 2,319 traffic signals in the region. The catalyst for the formation of the committee was a study conducted by the FHWA that recommended developing a program to focus on the regional operation of the traffic signal system. The Puget Sound RTOC will promote a collaborative and coordinated planning approach to coordination of traffic signals and regional traffic operations of both freeways and arterials.
The Puget Sound RTOC was recently highlighted in an article published by the Puget Sound Business Journal which recognized the formation of the RTOC as a "basic congestion-reducing program" to improve traffic light synchronization.
