Good Practice Traveler Information - Southeast Florida
Southeast Florida converted a ten-digit number to 511 in June 2002. The Southeast Florida SunGuide 511 service provides traveler information, in both English and Spanish, for roadways in Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, and Broward counties, as well as the Florida Keys portion of Monroe County. Prior to the implementation of 511, monthly call counts averaged about 11,250 calls per month, however, at the end of the first full month when 511 was available, the calls jumped to nearly 75,000 calls per month. The call volume has climbed to well over 200,000 calls per month.
A user satisfaction survey was conducted between October 2003 and January 2004. Results from respondents indicated that over 99 percent found the 511-related services useful, with over 97 percent changing their travel route based on the 511 information received, and over 96 percent perceiving that they saved time because of the information. Eighty percent of the users indicated that 511 was either their most or second most important source of transportation information.
